Field Recording
is what I want to do in the next years ,
or better
‘sound photographs’
I am currently creating content for this site. To meet my own quality standards I still need some time for this.
------------------------------------------------------------------
I haven't worked with field recorders for a long time. But I have a project in mind, ‘sound photographs’. Thats why I bought some sound equipment !
I wont go with the expensive Nagra, Sound Devices or Sennheiser.
ZOOM & Rode and the like do the job for me...
------------------------------------------------------------------
My ZOOM F4 Field Recorder
Thanks again Achim for the good price !
The preamp is of the F4 is very good, in my opinion almost on par with Sound Devices! Even in a very quiet environment you hear no preamp noise!
When it comes to recording, the F4 Multitrack Field Recorder Kit has made life so much easier with better navigation over menus & audio levels, with 6-inputs and a variable-frequency slate tone generator to confirm levels. The F4 features a very light design of 1.0kg with a rock-solid construction with tons of features such as multi-track recording to record up to six discrete tracks, camera return with an input 5/6 for monitoring purposes, record simultaneously on two SD/SDHC/SDXC cards up to 512GB each, a file protection that saves files automatically while recording in case of power loss and more, onboard mixer with effects that allows flexible signal routing from all inputs to all outputs and reduce sound of wind and other noises.
24-Bit/192 kHz with Integrated Mixer
Four Combo XLR-1/4" Inputs
High-Quality Preamps with Phantom Power
Built-In Limiters on Every Input/Output
------------------------------------------------------------------
My Zoom PCF-8n Bag
Thanks again Martin for the good price !
Bag suitable for Zoom F8n, F8 and F4
Opening on the side for access to the connectors.Removable, water-repellent and transparent top Padded straps. Interior has various compartments through dividers with hook and loop fastener Pockets on the front and back. Removable bottom part allows access to the battery compartment/bottom of the F8n recorder
------------------------------------------------------------------
MY ZOOM F-Control
The F-Control is a mixing control surface that gives me more control and flexibility when recording in the field. It works with the Zoom F4/8 Multitrack Field Recorder to create a complete and professional on-location audio rig.
Recording Essentials at my Fingertips
The F-Control makes recording and mixing easy with nine 60 mm faders (eight + Master) and hands-on input/output control for trim, pan, track arming, and PFL. Monitoring channel and output levels is simple with 12-segment LED meters, three user-programmable buttons, and a dedicated time code button. I can also organize recordings using the Track Scene edit buttons for metadata entry. The F-Control gives me the option to connect an external USB keyboard so I can enter information for “Track Name”, “Scene Increment”, “Scene Name”, “Notes”, and “False Take.”
------------------------------------------------------------------
My Zoom H5 Field Recorder
A nice backup recorder !
Four tracks of simultaneous recording and interchangeable mic capsules make the H5 flexible and powerful
The preamp of the H5 is not the best but for normal sounds it is fully ok. Only for the very quiet environments it is not quiet enough, you can hear preamp noise.
The H5 portable ‘Handy Recorder’ is designed for multitrack live event recording, broadcast, or ENG situations. It provides over fifteen hours of operation with 2x AA alkaline battery cells, and can simultaneously record up to four tracks of audio. The include shock-mounted microphone capsule allows X/Y audio capture up to 140dB SPL, whilst optional and interchangeable audio input capsules provide a number of differing input methods.
Recording directly to 16MB to 2GB SD card or 4GB to 32GB SDHC card, the Hrecords up to 24-bit/96kHz in BWF-compliant WAV format, or 48 to 320kbps in MP3 format. Internal processing allows to employ low-cut filtering, compression, limiting.
It's so small that you can always have it with you, it's very beneficial not have to carry the big set all, the time !
For my ZOOM H5 I have so far the following microphone capsules they also work with the my Zoom F4 & F1
The MSH-6 capsule for the H5 contains a unidirectional forward-facing microphone element as well as a bi-directional, side-facing microphone element to capture audio otherwise known as ‘mid-side’. The compatible recorder’s MS (mid-side) decoder allows the capture of a stereo image that can be later adjusted
The XYH-5 capsule is designed for live broadcast and podcast applications and provides two unidirectional condenser microphones, each fixed at a 90degree angle. Capable of handling input levels up to 140dB SPL, this capsule is also well equipped to capture audio from live concerts or electronic news gathering (ENG) applications.
Zoom EXH-6 - Dual XLR/TRS Combo Input Capsule for
The EXH-6 from Zoom adds two additional XLR/TRS combo inputs to the Zoom recorder. This makes the H5 capable of recording up to four external signals simultaneously. Capable of handling either mic or line-level signals, each input is equipped with its own preamp and -20 dB pad. But his module does not provide phantom power.

-------------------------------------------------------
My Audio-Technica AT2022
Audio-Technica AT2022 X/Y Stereo Condenser Microphone.
A dual-element condenser microphone designed for stereo recording, the AT2022 features two unidirectional condenser capsules in an X/Y configuration pivot to allow for 90-degree (narrow) or 120-degree (wide) stereo operation for extremely versatile pickup. The capsules also fold flat for storage and transportation. It is designed for general stereo recording, as well as field sound capture. The AT2022 includes a 1.6′ (0.5 m) cable terminating in a 3-pin XLRF-type and a 1/8″ (3.5 mm) connector. The output of the microphone is a 3-pin XLRM-type connector. The microphone requires a 1.5V AA battery for operation. A switch permits choice of flat response or low-frequency roll-off (via integral 80 Hz high-pass filter) to help control undesired ambient noise. The microphone is enclosed in a rugged housing.
The AT2022 is an affordable stereomicrophone with a good noise performance. It can be used with any recorder since it doesn’t need phantom power and comes with furry wind protection. It is best suited for louder recordings like dialog, musical instruments, and atmospheres 50 dB or more.
Now I need a XLR cabel that works with this mic. My ZOOM F4 has no 3.5 mm connector just XLR. But my ZOOM H5 got one...
I talked to the Audio-Technica service and they recommend the pro snake 90016 cable from Thomann, strange that they don't have their own cable to their microphone....
-------------------------------------------------------
My AQUARIAN hydrophone
Unfortunately without XLR ...
The hydrophone is designed to work with any recording device, computer, or transmitter that offers a plug-in-powered, 3.5mm microphone input. It uses a low-noise, robust transducer assembly and includes a low noise internal impedance buffer amp. Operation is very simple: just plug in and use. It is a really good hydrophone ! POWERED BY A 9V BATTERY
---------------------------------------------------------------
My Rode NT1A pair
They have Ultra-low self-noise (5dBA), so perfect for binaural nature recordings!
For this mics to work well outside I have to build two wind baskets arrount the original Spider Shock Mount, unfortunately there is nothing suitable on the market for these microphones ...
------------------------------------------------------
My Rode NTG-2 condenser shotgun microphone is nice to have, it fits perfect in my Rode Blimp !
The NTG2's elevated sensitivity allows it to produce strong output levels without having to apply extreme gain at my mic preamp. Sonically, the NTG2 delivers consistently clear sound due in part to its gentle rise in high frequencies and its rumble-reducing selectable low-cut filter. The durable and lightweight high-grade aluminum housing is finished in hard-wearing epoxy paint to withstand the stress of field recording.
I also have a small handle and a dead cat/wombat for it, perfect for carrying with my ZOOM H5!
---------------------------------------------------------------
My Rode NTG1
Shot Gun Microphone
The NTG1 is a lightweight condenser shotgun microphone, designed for professional applications in film, video, television and broadcast. Its full frequency response, low noise and transparency make it ideal in a range of applications, including filmmaking, voice-over and streaming, while its low weight (105 grams) makes it an ideal boom microphone. It also features a switchable high-pass filter for added flexibility.
Because of its high sensitivity, the Rode NTG1 can generate high output levels without adding too much gain to your preamps; this helps reduce the self-noise for the preamps and delivers cleaners sounds.
Key Features:
Premium shotgun microphone
Low noise and full frequency response
Highly directional supercardioid polar pattern
High-pass filter (80Hz)
Lightweight (105 grams) and easy to use

------------------------------------------------------
My Sennheiser MK2002 binaural microphone system
Binaural audio recording is arguably the most realistic method of capturing audio by creating an accurate 3D-audio experience. The basic concept relies on the acoustic shadow created by the human head, which allows capture of audio directionality along all-three axis, X, Y, and Z , using two microphones. Each microphone is placed into the ear canal of a dummy head, or, as with this Sennheiser MK2002, within the outer ear of the dummy head or my (human) head.

Rode NT-SF1---
And there are the new Ambisonic Microphones like the Rode NT-SF1 . The NT-SF1 records the entire spherical sound field – every sound from every direction – in perfect A-Format™ audio, which can be converted to B-Format™ audio and then manipulated infinitely using the 'Soundfield by RØDE' plug-in. One alter the mic directivity, position, and rotation after recording; create a full 7.1.4 surround mix; create a fully head-tracked 360° soundscape for immersive video. The possibilities are, quite literally, only limited by one imagination...
I am not sure yet if
Ambisonic Microphones are the right way to go.
It is actually enough to record binaurally...
---------------------------------------
The MBHO Schneider Disc
The Schneider disc is a variation of the Jecklin disc developed by Jürgen Jecklin for his stereo microphone technique known as Optimal Stereo Signal (OSS). The idea behind OSS is to use a pair of spaced omnidirectional microphones approximately 6 inches apart (roughly the distance between the human ears) with a disc placed in between the spaced pair. The disc is covered with a thin layer of foam intended to absorb high frequencies - thus improving stereo separation between the microphones. The difference between the two types of discs is the foam sphere at the center of the Schneider disc, which reduces the amount of high-frequency energy reflected from the disc, and results in an increase of stereo separation.Below approximately 200 Hz, the Schneider disc has ittle (if any) effect on the stereo signal because the audio wavelength is large enough to bend around the
disc, equally reaching both microphones. However as frequency increases above 200 Hz, the Schneider disc's foam sphere increases stereo separation between the paced pair.

It will take some time to get everything together because I recycle as much as I can, that means I buy most everything used !
All my sound equipment I bought myself, nothing is sponsored!
I am not affiliated with any of the brands mentioned or featured !
Especially here in Germany you can buy such things in top condition for a fraction of the new price. Even then it will not be cheap at all but cheaper than new for sure and way better for our environment...
For all the other hard to get used, there is a very good store in Germany Thomann !
I am not affiliated with Thomann, I just like the store and the very good prices & service they provide !
