Some Call It Adventure I Call It My Way Of Live

Equipment for the next Expedition-Boat

I don't have a boat that is right for me yet, but that doesn't stop me from being on the lookout for the right gear for the next big trip!

The new boat will be packed with electronics and other usefull stuff, just like my good old ORCA.

I like all the electronic gadgets that are around these days. They make the daily running of the boat easier and saver. That is why I am going to install everything that has a place on board and that I can afford to buy!

The good thing is that I can install and connect everything myself .

I already did that with my ORCA.

A real money saver...

.....................................................................................................................................

I am a recycler, which means I buy as much as I can second hand!

In the last years I have already  bought  a lot  of  equipment   for   the   boat  on  the second -  hand market, for the sake of the environment  and  my  wallet !

If  you  are  like  me  and  have to equip your boat on a shoestring budget, you will have to search the internet for many months to find the right second hand parts.

A lot of work, but well worth it!

I  also had  a  few  pieces  of  equipment left over from  my  previous  expeditions  which  I will now be able to use  for  this  new  project.

As always, I will be using both nautical charts and topo maps on board so that I am always well informed about my surroundings. This has paid off for many years on my expeditions - you can never have too much information!

The MFR6 provides incoming NMEA data such as AIS, autopilot, wind, GPS, depth, speed.

Such a device is extremely important for me, it makes it much easier to be quickly informed about the most important data when I am on board!

The Azimuth combines a digital fluxgate compass and an LCD display into one compact, watertight unit. The large heads-up display provides easy-to-read heading, compass rose, and off-course steering information. And with its standard NMEA 0183 output, it can send its precise heading data to other onboard equipment.

AIS Receiver

My Watcheye receiver receives data from both Class "A" and Class "B" AIS,

AIS, which stands for Automatic Identification System, is a device that periodically transmits and receives information about a ship's location to its surroundings, enabling collision prevention and ship control.

Of course I will install an AIS transmitter when I get my boat!

NASA MARINE WEATHERMAN

For many years commercial vessels have received weather forecasts via radioteletype (RTTY) from the German National Weather Agency (DWD). Whilst a few intrepid yachtsmen have tuned into this excellent service, with a general purpose HF receiver connected to a personal computer, results have often been dissapointing.
Weatherman combiness a synthesised HF receiver, a powerful computer and a high contrast display to form a complete, reliable, stand alone RTTY receiver.
Unlike Navtex, which is an international service for navigational and meteorological warnings, weatherman is dedicated to receiving weather forecasts.
DWD operates on a 24 hour continuous schedule and broadcasts continually on several frequencies simultaneously. This helps to cope with the radio propagation and reception conditions which vary with time of day and the distance from the transmitter.
The DWD service is free to yachtsmen but must not be used for commercial purposes.
The daily schedule includes times of day, frequencies and areas of coverage. The user can program Weatherman to record information only from areas of interset. The memory is able to store several thousand lines of text.

 My Leica BIG 35/4 !

With a selected MIL-SPEC XD4 type XX2050C!

Absolutely flawless tube with no spots or shadows or anything like that ! One of the BEST !

I had the same device on my ORCA but that was a Big 35/2 ( the tube was not as good as this one now ), it was a big help on the way !

Being able to see clearly at night is a huge safety benefit when traveling.
I can see almost as well at night as I can during the day, if not better, with the thermal imaging camera and residual light amplifier! I wouldn't want to be without these tools.

Water Filter System

Fresh and clean water is one of the most important things to have on board your boat.

© Copyright by Ch. Breier © Copyright by Ch. Breier

The Katadyn Expedition water filter is one of the most expensive filters on the market, but with a water filter capacity of over 4 liters per minute also one of the fastest!

Thanks to its almost indestructible construction, the Expedition water filter proves itself very well on my expeditions.

I have used my filter for many, many years !

One filter cartridge lasts almost
100,000 liters ...

Side Scan Sonar

© Copyright by Ch. Breier © Copyright by Ch. Breier

On my ORCA I had a side scan sonar installed which helped me a lot. That`s why the new boat is getting one installed again! There are some very good systems out now.

Which one is the best? I don't know yet.

I have to do some more research. One thing is already clear: a system with a large screen, on which you can see everything reasonably, will be anything but cheap, even used...

Weather Satellite System

NOAA Weather Sat System © Copyright by Ch. Breier NOAA Weather Sat System © Copyright by Ch. Breier

This lightweight weather satellite system, which allows me to receive live NOAA weather satellite images on the move, has been a great help on my trips. It has been with me on many of my expeditions and I wouldn't want to be without it!

I have tried several NOAA weather satellite systems!

( WRAASE, Vierling, R2FX, APT-06 etc. )

but none of them came close to the quality of my XAXERO SkyEye satellite system ! Unfortunately, the SkyEye is no longer manufactured and I am really glad that I have one of these systems!

Polar orbiting satellites fly in a polar, sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of about 800 km.
An orbit lasts about 100 minutes. This means that the Earth's surface is completely scanned once every 12 hours. The disadvantage of the low refresh rate is offset by the advantage of good spatial resolution.

This is a LIVE weather satellite image of NOAA 18, taken with my SkyEye Pro weather satellite system on February 6, 2007 in Kalkaska / USA. In the center of the image you can see the big lakes.

© Copyright by Ch. Breier © Copyright by Ch. Breier

Using this system, I can plot where I'm going LIVE on the satellite image with the built-in GPS !
I can also determine the land & water temperature LIVE to +/-2 degrees (C) or see where ice is forming or breaking ...
